His phone suddenly receives one final message. PHONE: «EMERGENCY BROADCAST» «TOKYO EVACUATION HAS FAILED.» «ALL CIVILIANS ARE ADVISED TO LEAVE THE METROPOLITAN AREA.» Ren looks toward the horizon. The fingers moved once. Then stopped. For a few seconds, nothing happened. Until— Two dark gray eyes opened. They did not look frightened. They did not look confused. They simply stared. As if they had been waiting for this moment long before they fell asleep. The boy slowly sat up. Dust slipped from his long coat. He looked around. Broken stone. An unfamiliar sky. A world that had continued without him. He remained silent. Then he noticed something in his hand. A tiny, old piece of something. He stared at it. His expression became strangely empty. «...Oh.» His voice was quiet. Almost amused. He closed his fingers around it. Then he whispered: «I forgot.» A pause. His eyes slowly moved toward the horizon. «No...» A faint smile appeared. «I didn't.» He stood. His legs trembled slightly—not from weakness, but from having not moved for an impossible amount of time. He took one step. Then another. The world remained silent. For the first time, something almost resembling regret crossed his face. Then he laughed quietly. «I'm late.» He looked toward the horizon again. His eyes became strangely focused. «I'm very late.» Silence. Then, almost as if speaking to someone standing beside him: «You waited for me, didn't you?» Nothing answered. His smile returned. But this time... There was something unsettling behind it. «I'm sorry.» He began walking. «I promised.» The camera slowly pulls away. The boy becomes smaller against the enormous landscape.
